Yandere Imouto ni Aisaresugite Kozukuri Kankin Seikatsu Chapter 16
Chapter 16 ～ Lies
"Oh my. Welcome home. Isn’t it pretty late?"
When I come home, mum would always tell me it’s late while she sits on the sofa watching television.
"Yeah. I guess it is."
I try to tell myself not to make too big of a deal out of it.
"How about dinner?"
"No, thanks. I’m not hungry."
Mom looked at me all surprised after hearing what I said.
"’Not hungry’? You?", she said as if asking me for an explanation.
"Actually, no. I think it’s called heat fatigue or something?"
"I don’t believe you.", mum mumbled as she was pointing her finger straight to my cheek.
"Don’t worry about it."
"Did something happen to you?", she asked, looking all serious.
I didn’t say a thing, because it seemed like she could see through just about anything.
"Nothing happened to me. I’m not hiding anything from you."
I had no clue if she knew my inner thoughts or not, but she still kept on talking.
"I care a lot about you and Shirube. It’s normal to have a lot of things to worry about, but this is the only place you can properly call home. Please don’t forget that, okay?"
Mum stopped me from talking.
"Shirube would feel lonely if she saw you looking like that, you know? You’re not good-looking, but you still are a good boy.", mum lightly jeered, and laughed.
She usually doesn’t seem to think much, but she really looks out for us.
"Whaaat is it?"
"Thank you. Even though it’s expected of a parent like you."
"Oh my. You’ll be a parent as well, you know?"
"Duh? I won’t be a kid forever."
"Is that so? Just so you know, Shirube-chan has been waiting for you to come home. She said you'd be happy to tell her everything. Did you tell her that?"
"…… I don't think I did."
Mum let out a faint sigh.
"Shirube might stab you to death if you say something wrong."
"Will you stop messing with me?"
"Teehee. She’s not messing with you, oniisan.", Shirube suddenly snuck up behind me, and spoke.
I jumped up in surprise.
"Since when did you get here?"
"Welcoming oniisan when he comes home is a little sister’s job☆", Shirube said wearing her heart on her sleeve.
"By the way, oniisan. I know you’re quite busy, but would you please go to my room?"
Her lips were smiling, but her eyes weren’t. I'm ninety percent sure of it.
"I-I’m talking to mum right now, though."
I had to say something as a temporary solution.
"Can’t it wait until tomorrow, Shirube? We’re discussing something important about my future."
"Well. I have something important to discuss with you, too."
"Okay…… I’ll go, then."
"Thank goodness my oniisan is so understanding♪ Let’s go, shall we?"
As Shirube was dragging me out of the living room, I could hear mum murmuring「My condolences.」
Shirube hugged me all of a sudden once we stepped inside her room.
"You shouldn’t be doing this. Mum’s here.", I hurriedly called out to her.
Without an answer, Shirube made sure to brush her cheeks up against my chest. After embracing me for about three minutes, she seemed reluctant to pull her body away.
"…… This isn’t enough."
I was pretty sure that we had a lot of skinship today, but for some reason, it wasn’t enough.
"I know you won’t mind, so let me hug you more."
"I’d rather not talk about… ‘That’.", I said as I pulled myself away from Shirube.
"What are you talking about?"
"’What?’ I’m talking about what happened after school. I’ve been thinking."
I looked at Shirube like a soldier standing in front of a landmine.
"So…… What should we do about the engagement? Of course, we shouldn’t ignore it."
"No, we can’t just shrug it off. I wonder if there’s another way we can approach this."
"Even if we were left with no choice…… The thought of siblings getting hitched is still absurd."
I wonder if this was what mum meant when she said ‘My condolences’. Shit.
"Listen, Shirube. We’re siblings, so we can’t get married."
"Well, I don’t care. I believe you feel the same way I do."
"What made you think that?"
I have to tell her about me and Ayaka.
"You see, I started going out with Ayaka."
"That’s why I think you should look for someone better. I can even help you."
"Oniisan, today isn’t April Fools’ Day, you know."
"I know. I’m not lying."
"If it isn’t a lie, then it must be a joke. Right? Since when did you turn into a bad guy, oniisan?", Shirube jokingly said looking like she’s giving me an earful.
But she stopped laughing when I didn’t react.
"What’s wrong, oniisan? Please tell me you’re lying."
"It’s true. Ayaka and I are now official. I don’t know how long our relationship would last, though."
I didn’t mean to hurt her with my words, but it won’t really matter when it comes to Shirube.
"What do you mean?…………"
"I’m sorry for dropping the bomb unannounced, but this is all for the best, you know?"
Shirube went silent, and looked down after hearing what I said. She was mumbling indistinct words.
"……Why?", Shirube suddenly asked.
"I’m sorry, but we can’t be lovers. I hope you find a good person, as well."
It seemed Shirube was clinging on as she stared straight back at me.
"What’s wrong, oniisan? Did I do something bad? If I did, I apologise."
"It’s okay. You did nothing wrong. I don’t hate you. Please don’t get me wrong."
"Therefore, you love me."
"I do love you…… As my sister, but not as a lover."
"…… You have the wrong idea."
"What do you mean?"
"Don’t you get it? The law does not recognise marriages between relatives. In fact, no one does. It’ll only lead to a lonely life."
"That’s not true! I don’t think so! I won’t ever feel unhappy as long as I’m with you, oniisan!"
Shirube raised her voice. It’s been a long time since I last saw her get this agitated。
"We’re still students, but we have to reach out to society from now on. We need to have someone we can depend on for as long as we live, and that’s why I am dating Ayaka. "
I patiently persuaded Shirube, and it looked like she got quiet.
"Hiiragi-san is just as dangerous as I expected. It seemed like she was simply talking, and getting chummy with you in class, but she had to take drastic measures. Didn’t she, oniisan?"
"Stop saying scary things. I'm not that close with Ayaka yet."
"Please stop lying."
"I’m not lying. I still don’t know her that well."
"I see Hiiragi-san trampling you over, so you two having a relationship would be impossible, oniisan. I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it. I can’t believe it!", Shirube kept on repeating her words.
"You’re right. I was lying."
"I won’t let anyone have oniisan’s heart. How many times have I told you that? I won’t cheat on you, either."
I tell her with a heavy pain in my chest, "I'm really glad you feel that way, but we should know when to draw the line. Would you be okay with explaining this situation to mum? Would you be able to say this to your late father? Please think it over."
"You don't have to worry about that."
Shirube placed her hands on my neck.
"It'd be better to experience happiness without thinking of what others might say. Everyone should put themselves first, and ignore what the loud 'world' may tell them."
"Now, let’s become one. Oniisan.", Shirube said as she placed her lips close to my ear.
I just snapped.
"I said ‘Stop it’!"
I blacked out, and sent Shirube flying. She hit the desk, which made the notebooks and pens roll and fall.
I ran to Shirube’s side without thinking.
"Shi-Shirube?! Are you alright?!"
She didn’t say a word. She just said random words like a broken doll would.
"O-o-o-nii-san, re-jec-ted, me-"
"Shirube! Are you alright?! Shirube!"
Shirube let out a loud scream, and then rushed outside my room.
"Hey, wait! Shirube!"
She disregarded me, and I could hear her lock the door from inside her room.
But I didn’t care, and I kept on banging the door with all my strength.
"Shirube! Can you hear me?! Open the door!"
"…… Don’t come here."
I can hear her forcing her voice out.
"I don’t wanna see you, oniisan. Please stay outside."
As I was talking, I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Please stop, Susumu. Now is not the time for pranks."
"Mum……? B-but, Shirube… Shirube’s in pain."
"What did you do to her?"
Mum darted her eyes at me. I couldn’t answer back.
And then she calmly said, "You should trust Shirube-chan. That’s the best thing you can do for her as an older brother."
Hearing her words cooled my head down.
"Okay. I understand……"
After I said that, mum laughed, and took her hand off my shoulder.
With a disgusted feeling in my heart, I went back inside my room. The clock had already struck twelve. I wonder how I should look like in front of Ayaka. Then, I suddenly remembered the white envelope in my bag, and took it out.
It's the last will left by the 'real' Ayaka. I was so cautious to open and read it.
In it were detailed accounts of an oppressed girl's hardships. She wrote eloquently, but she didn't specify exactly who bullied her. It spoke of how tired she was of life, how she was tormented for being a failure. The order, and her choice of words reflected how close she was to giving up.
I felt totally bad while reading it. I felt pity knowing that the person who wrote this letter can't be brought back anymore. That nobody remembers her. Then, she got tortured once more. It felt like she was vulnerable to the malice of corrupted people.
As I looked at the last part of the will, a line of revised texts caught my eye. Perhaps this was the part that her father had mentioned. I read through it with careful detail.
「――Wait. This is-……」
