3cm Hunter Chapter 1
Before you start reading:
1. This is my third novel, but i will NOT post this one regularly. I plan to translate this one more earnestly during my school’s winter break.
2. The protagonists's name is Baek-hyun. His name is pronounced like behk (silent h, short e sound as in "egg") + hyun (like when ariana grande says "yuh," that kind of a "u" sound). Behk-hyun.
3. Yes, there's a manhwa version and i really want to translate it. Should I?
4. Tteokbokki, which is what baek-hyun goes out to buy, is not only spicy and red, but also very very temperature hot.
5. 1,000 won is slightly less than 1 USD.
Chapter 1: 3cm hunter begins
Warning: For 15 years and up.
Kang Baek-hyun has only one family member, a sister, Kang Mina.
Two years ago, their family had gotten into a car accident, and, unfortunately, their parents had died on the spot. Baek-hyun's sister Mina fell into a coma.
Five months after the accident. Baek-hyun, who had buried his parents in the ossuary, decided to live alone with his sister who was discharged from the hospital.
Mina had a wound left by the accident. It wasn't a physical wound that could be healed over time, but a disease of the mind and heart that did not heal so easily. His poor sister had auditory hallucinations as an aftereffect of her coma.
Though she appeared relatively normal in front of her brother, she couldn't say a word in front of other people. Baek-hyun went to several hospitals all over the country to try to treat his sister's symptoms, but he couldn't find effective treatment. But he couldn't just put his one and only sister in a mental hospital, so as Mina's oppa, he made a serious decision.
I’ll stay by her side for the rest of my life.
So Baek-hyun dropped out of high school and got a GED.
Two years had passed since then. Fortunately, his sister seemed to get better after staying away from people. Although she couldn’t meet and talk with people yet, she could now surf the web and watch movies, and she also began to have passion for studying, slowly and steadily stepping onto a path for her future.
Perhaps the future didn't seem so bleak.
Their parents had left enough for them to live on for the rest of their lives, and recently, his sister had decided what she would do for a living. She wanted to be a writer, and had recently started writing a fiction webnovel.
The title sounded like many others.
How a Princess Survives in the Small World
However, compared to the average title, the novel was very unique. The story had an interesting plot and setting that you couldn't find anywhere else. Baek-hyun asked questions while reading the story introduction.
"This storyline is so unique. Are all the people really as small as ants?"
"Yeah. So in the story, people are eaten by rats, spiders, and so on."
"Woah, even though I'm just imagining it, it sounds terrible. I'm getting goosebumps!"
"It’s not that bad. Humans have killed too many creatures. It's not bad for human beings to be killed as well."
"…Mina-ya. You're pretty cruel, huh." Baek-hyun was speechless at his sister's words.
[t/n: 미나야 (Mina-ya). Mina = 미나. People often attach 야 (ya) or an 아 (ah) sound as a form of endearment.]
"It's just a novel. It's not like I'm really like that…"
After the car accident, his sister had developed some kind of aversion to other human beings. In front of him, Mina was a good little sister, but her thoughts and values were clearly reflected in this novel. That’s how he indirectly learned of her true thoughts and feelings.
Right after the car accident, Baek-hyun had wallowed in grief, blaming the hit-and-run driver who had killed his parents and make his sister become a misanthrope.
But now? Their lives were changing.
Life is long, and my sister and I are still young. We have to pick ourselves up everyday at a time despite resenting the world.
A positive, future-oriented mind. This was Baek-hyun's strength.
He looked at the novel and was a bit relieved. Though the novel had pretty dark elements, that wasn’t all there was to it.
"Mina-ya. The princess described here is you, right?"
"But there’s no other person I can think of who could be the princess?"
“Heh. That's right, it’s me."
"But Mina. If the princess dies, what happens to all the other people?"
"They die. If the princess dies, everyone will die."
"Mina…I don’t know if this is going to be popular .Wouldn’t it be better to change the story a bit?"
"No, because I think that's what the rule was?”
“But you know, the princess has a brother who protects her. That’s the focus of this novel."
"Right. I should have known you had thought of something to make the novel a good read."
But Baek-hyun’s heart was still bitter as he thought how his sister, who talked to no one but him, would only open her heart to her brother through a novel she wrote.
A month passed, and Baek-hyun came home to find his younger sister crying.
"Mina-ya. What's wrong?"
“I applied with the novel, but it wasn't accepted.”
“They said because the main character is a woman, no one will read it when they see it’s a fantasy novel with a female protagonist." In the fantasy genre, the readers' opinions really mattered, and now it appeared that his sister’s novel had been rejected.
"Let’s write another. Oppa will help you this time." But the rejection of her novel had hurt his sister much more than he thought.
"I hope this world is ruined. I hope everyone shrinks like people do in the novel and gets eaten by a spider, or a rat, and dies!"
"Mina-ya! No matter how hurt you feel after every loss, if you think in that way you won't be able to succeed in the writing world!"
"I don't care! Why aren’t you on my side? Do you hate me too?"
"There's no way I can hate you. You're my only family."
[t/n: 으아아아앙 (euaaaang) in hangul is the korean crying sound. Sort of like when an infant cries "waaaaaah."]
Baek-hyun left after his sister fell asleep to buy tteokbokki, Mina's favorite food.
He reached the tteokbokki stand on the second floor of the Daehyung supermarket. After waiting for awhile in a long line, his turn to order finally came.
"How much is the tteokbokki?"
"3,000 won per serving!"
"Please pack six servings."
"Six servings? Are you sure?"
"It’s okay. My sister likes to eat a lot of this." Baek-hyun’s face held a small smile. It was a bit more expensive than he thought, but it wasn’t a waste for his sister.
Hopefully after eating this she'll feel better. Seriously, that publisher! Why couldn't they just publish the novel. Baek-hyun looked around as the tteokbokki lady packed his food.
He could hear the sound of people coming and going, their hustle and bustle. A man in hiking clothes walking with his family, a middle-aged woman shopping for groceries on her own, and a family who had brought their pet into the supermarket.
Right at that moment, something passed by. Baek-hyun yelled out, surprised, as he saw what it was.
“Ahh! Ajumma! Isn’t that a rat right behind you?"
[t/n: 아줌마 = Ajumma = ma'am. Means middle-aged woman.]
"Yes. It was this huge black one. It ran into the vent."
"I'm sorry, kid. It appeared a few days ago and so I called a professional treatment company, but they can't seem to catch it…"
"…I’m really sorry, but I’ll have to cancel my order."
Baek-hyun was worried that the food might have been contaminated.
I came all the way here…Should I go somewhere else to buy it?
Baek-hyun shook his head.
It was then that it all began.
"Kyaaaaaak!" Suddenly, the people around him screamed.
[t/n: 끼야아악 = kyaaaaak = screaming]
Baek-hyun thought the rat had appeared again. But right when he looked around for it.
He felt something strange inside his body.
“Badump! Badump! Badump!』
His heartbeat was getting louder and louder.
『Thud, thud, thud!』
The vibration of his heartbeat spread all throughout his body.
『Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!』
He felt his clothes slip away.
His pants also fell.
Even his underpants…
[t/n: lol, tmi author]
And then Baek-hyun’s body was floating in the air. The moment he noticed that nothing was touching his feet…
His body also fell to the floor.
Terrified, Baekhyun screamed without abandon. At that moment, he couldn't even think about how and why he had been floating.
[t/n: a soft falling sound, like the sound if you dropped a stuffed animal.]
Baekhyun fell, colliding with soft material, and fell unconscious.
"My body…my body…"
"This is a nightmare! It has to be a fucking nightmare!"
Baek Hyun woke up to shouting all around him.
He raised his head and looked up. A huge piece of cloth was covering his vision.
But the pattern on it was familiar.
A mysterious message appeared in front of him.
[You have entered the Small World]
A status window, similar to ones you would see in games, appeared in front of him, and…
…captured an image of Baek-hyun's body that had been stripped naked.
Looking around, he realized that his surroundings were humongous. The square tile beneath his feet seemed at like several kilometers in length. The ceiling seemed hundreds of meters high. All around him, other people seemed to be coming out of huge piles of fabric as well.
No way…this can’t be happening…
Suddenly, his body was covered in clothes, pants, and even a pair of sneakers. At the same time, a message window popped up.

[You have a new main quest.]
[Main Quest: Find the Princess.]
A mysterious window.
Something that couldn't have happened, no, something that shouldn't have happened had occurred.
The prince my sister spoke of.
And he was the prince.
No way, it can't be the same thing. Mina-ya, what did you do?
The status window popped up once more.
[Minimap function has been activated.]
[The Prince can now know the location of the Princess in real time.]
A large map appeared in front of him on a screen.
He could see the layout of the supermarket.
So then, where was the princess?
Every time he swiped his hand, the map in front of Baek-hyun would show a different place in the direction his hand had moved.
As he tried out different hand motions, he pointed his hand at a spot on the screen and drew his hands together.
The map zoomed in.
Are you serious…is this real?
He couldn't believe any of this was happening.
He tried pinching his cheeks and pinching his thighs, but the pain was real.
[t/n: korean people do this to test if something is a dream or not, usually when the situation is unbelievable or too good to be true. So if you pinch yourself and it doesn't hurt, people say it's a dream, and if you do and it hurts, it's real.]
This was reality.
Baek-hyun spread his hands apart, and the map zoomed out and showed a larger area. The location of the princess on the minimap was his home. Mina's over there right now, so that means the princess is really Mina, right?
Baek-hyun looked for his cell phone, searching his huge pants. Finding his smartphone, he tried to pull it out of his pants pocket, but it wouldn't budge. It was too heavy.
Damn it, Damn it!
Right then, he heard a deafening roar and turned around.
A high pitched scream rang across the place like a broken mic. Baek-hyun’s eyes searched the vicinity.
He then noticed something huge, like 25 stories high. It was so high that you could only see it with your head raised up all the way.
It was a female giant.
But then Baek-hyun noticed who the giant was.
….It's the ajumma who was selling tteokbokki to me earlier. He could see she was experiencing the same symptoms he had before he shrank.
A loudly beating heart. Thumping so hard and so fast until you would feel like going insane. That's why the ajumma had screamed just now.
Baek-hyun’s predictions were correct.
The ajumma's clothes began to slip away. As her body got smaller, the people around Baek-hyun stared, as if fascinated by the shrinking spectacle.
The pot of tteokbokki the ajumma had been holding also began to fall to the ground.
[t/n: 지이이이잉! (jiiiing), i'm assuming is the sound of the vibrations of the pot crashing on the ground]
A tremendous noise sounded as the pot fell to the floor, followed by tremors of the crash. Pain pricked everyone's ears. People covered their ears, trying to block out the tremendous sounds.
"Euaaaahhhk! Ahhhhhhhhhh! "
Something in the pot began to spread on the floor.
It was red hot lava.
It was the hot tteokbokki broth.
People nearest to the pot began to run, screaming.
Author’s corner: Hello, this is J. Robin. I finally entered my work on the Naver Webnovel site after knocking on their door for three years.
Every Tuesday, the webtoon is also being uploaded on the Naver Webtoon site, so if you prefer words then read the webnovel, and if you prefer manhwa then read webtoon. I'm thankful either way.
My other work, 'Becoming a Kitchen Police Legen,' is also a free series on Naver Webtoon. Hope you have fun.^^
